Benefits of Dancing
Have you ever wanted to perform an exercise that is both fun and healthy? If so, then great! Because dance enables us to have fun and take care of our physical, mental, and emotional
health.
Physical
⁃ Dancing improves the condition of our cardiovascular system. One’s heart rate increases
while dancing, which results faster pumps by the heart so that it gathers more oxygen for
the body. As a result, this can reduce one’s risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and
high blood pressure.
⁃ Dancing increases strength, balance, and flexibility. Because dance makes us exert
physical effort, it will assist our bodies in strengthening our muscles and bones. In addition
to this, both balance and flexibility are gained when dancing because consistently dancing
stretches our muscles, allowing us to become more flexible, and helps us maintain a strong
center of gravity, posture, and spatial awareness.
Mental
⁃ Dancing helps keep our minds sharp. Dancing continually requires learning new steps and
adapting them in performances. Thus, the brain and its power are challenged by
remembering the patterns and movements. To add to this, critical thinking is a huge part of
dance, especially in improv dance, which requires one to think of steps on-the-spot.
Emotional
⁃ Dancing helps boost self-confidence, improve social skills, and lift one’s mood. Dance
boosts self-confidence because we gain more awareness and discovery of the way our
body moves. Social skills are also gained because we have the option of dancing with
others. Dancing with family or friends (and maybe even meet new ones) allows a more
enjoyable experience. Lastly, dance can lift one’s mood by reducing symptoms of
depression and anxiety. By allowing the body to move freely and express, stress is greatly
reduced.
