A Healthy Way to Destress

Have you ever been asked this question, “what do you do when you are stressed?” If you have never heard of this question before, think about an answer before you continue reading. For those of you who have answered this question, I’ll also be asking you to think of an answer but this time, compare your answers from then and now, do you see any differences? You’re done now? Ok, I’m going to assume that you’ve done as I said so I’ll be moving onto the next part now.

From my experience, people often have these answers when asked this question: eat, game, sleep, etc. Of course, all these ways to destress are not entirely bad if you don’t overdo it but as a stressed person, do you think you’ll be able to control how much you eat, how much time you spend on your devices, or how long you laze around in bed? If you do all these do not worry I’m not shaming you, after all, I am just as guilty as you are. When I am stressed, I grab the nearest bag of chips and munch on them while playing my games, of course, while staying on my comfy sofa. While it is very relaxing, it isn’t exactly a healthy way to destress, I realized this a year and a half after the pandemic had started, a bit too late is it not? Well as they say, better late than never. I have recently changed my way of destressing, little by little. Instead of grabbing my bag of chips, I now walk to the room my cats are in, they are a big help in improving my mood! Although sometimes, I end up coming out more stressed than before I entered the room. Instead of grabbing my phone to play games, I do my assignments which are actually relaxing well… sometimes. My dance assignments are actually one of the assignments that help me destress!

Exercising and listening to music are good ways to destress and experts can agree on that, even the scientists can. Exercising causes us to release endorphins, a peptide hormone that is stored in our pituitary gland (it’s a gland attached to the base of our brain), and the effects of these hormones are very positive! Endorphins are natural painkillers that help us sleep, feel happier, and reduce our pain and discomfort. Listening to music is proven to reduce stress and anxiety, by studies that observed hospital patients who had surgery. When we dance, we not only exercise by moving our bodies but also listen to music while dancing to them. Dancing is a combination of two healthy ways to destress, it is the perfect combination.

To summarize everything I had stated in this blog, do not be as lazy as I was and find healthy ways to destress if you deem your way of destressing to be unhealthy. I would personally recommend you to take dancing as your new way to destress as it is a 2 in 1 combo! You get to listen to music and exercise at the same time! If ever you are already practising healthy ways to destress, then you don’t really need to change your destressing method but please do consider giving dance a try! It may be tiring but the feeling you get after finishing your dance is truly ineffable!
